The Amsterdammertje is an integral part of the cityscape. The story goes that the first Amsterdammertje was a cannon barrel placed vertically in the ground with a ball on top. Good story, but it turns out to be an
Impulsive as we are, we decided that the shape of the Amsterdammertje should be the shape of our bottle. No sooner said than done.
The production process of the Amsterdammertje
First of all, finding the right glass, which must meet all kinds of rules and requirements, we will spare you the details. What is nice to know is that our bottle is made using a blow in blow technique. A bit technical, but first the molten glass is poured into a straight mold. Air is blown into it so that the glass takes the shape of the straight mold. The glassware comes out of the mold fiery red and is then placed in a new mold. The details are blown into the bottle in this mold. Very important for us, because that is what makes our bottle so unique. The glass must then harden for 5 hours.
Even with glassblowing, things sometimes go wrong. In the event of an air bubble, grain of sand or unevenness, the entire batch (sometimes as many as 1000 pieces) goes into the glass container. The glass is melted down to then be melted around the mold again to create a perfect bottle.
To give the Amsterdammertje its frosted layer, it is submerged in an acid bath for a while, which creates a chemical reaction. After the bottle has had a nice bath, it has to ‘drip’ for 2 weeks. The bottle is then sent to our warehouse and we can fill it with our Premium Vodka. Cheers!
